"Like an execution" — this felt like such a gut punch to me when she said it during the interview. We've been hearing more about how AI detectors are creating what one teen called a "hellscape" for students and for teachers. This is a rich example and also reveals some of the fear, (mis)trust, and relational damage AI is inflicting on teachers and students, which we explored alongside CDT in this report.

Emily Weinstein, Nearfield

The language of "execution" — it's Kafka-esque. What's adds another layer to this is that we're being told AI detectors aren't great. As [one educator said], "There's no actual proof."

Carrie James, CDT

"[Our teacher] came in all quiet...says ‘everyone be in here, do not talk, put your phones and computers away’...She makes all of us sit apart from each other...she starts getting papers and calling us out one by one into the hallway… Most kids come back very upset… we’re all wondering what’s going on… [Turns out], we use something called Turnitin [AI detector] at the school. All of our papers, all of them, came back as 80% or more AI. [Our teacher is] calling us out one by one, and we essentially had to defend our paper… it was like an execution, you know, being called out one by one... Nine kids got zeroed out... because they weren't able to defend theirs well enough."
